By placing Trump’s presidency within this broader historical and institutional framework, the discussion aims to shed light on the resilience of American democracy, the vulnerabilities exposed by deep social divisions, and the possible trajectories of political power in the 21st century.

The roundtable discussion co-organized with the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs explores the dynamics of presidential power in the United States through the lens of Donald Trump’s presidency. Beyond direct political debates, it examines how Trump’s term in office tested the institutional balance among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, as well as the broader system of checks and balances.

Experts will review the historical evolution of presidential authority, revealing how it has expanded or contracted in response to crises, partisan realignments, and shifting public expectations. Particular attention will be given to the role of political polarization, media transformation, and populist movements in shaping the resilience of democratic norms.
